School zones protect children — and they're closely assessed on your driving test

Many learners feel uncertain about when school zones operate, how the 40 km/h limit works, and what testing officers expect. Because these areas involve children, visibility challenges, and traffic unpredictability, school zones are a key part of the Corrimal and Warrawong driving tests.

At Drivetime Driving School Wollongong, we help you understand how school zones work and practise them safely in real traffic so you feel confident and calm.

What Is a School Zone?

A school zone is the area around a school where the speed limit is 40 km/h unless a different speed is shown. The reduced limit applies between the ‘School Zone’ sign and the ‘End School Zone’ sign.

The purpose is simple: keep children safe during busy drop-off and pick-up times.

When Do School Zones Operate?

Standard school zone times in NSW are:

  • 8:00 am – 9:30 am
  • 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Always follow the times printed on the sign — some schools operate at different hours.

  • School zones apply on NSW gazetted school days
  • Pupil-free days still count — school zones are enforceable
  • Some non-government schools operate different calendars — school zones still apply

Why School Zones Matter for Learner Drivers

Testing officers use school zones to evaluate your:

  • Speed control and discipline
  • Observation and scanning for children
  • Hazard awareness and judgement
  • Ability to read signs under pressure

School zones are common on test routes in Corrimal, Warrawong, and surrounding suburbs.

Penalties for Speeding in School Zones

Speeding in a school zone results in heavier penalties than normal roads.

  • Exceeding the limit by up to 10 km/h = fine + 5 demerit points
  • L or P drivers lose their licence at 4 demerit points

A single mistake in a school zone can cost a Learner or Provisional driver their licence.

  • Maintain a stable 40 km/h speed
  • Scan for children and high-risk areas
  • Manage traffic, buses, and crossing zones
